Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar Sworn in as Supreme Court Judges

In a significant development, Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar were sworn in today as judges of the Supreme Court of India. Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai administered the oath of office in a ceremony held this morning.

The appointments come a day after the Central government officially notified their elevation to the apex court. Notably, Justice Vijay Bishnoi took the oath in Hindi, while Justices Anjaria and Chandurkar were sworn in using English.

With these inductions, the Supreme Court has now reached its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges.

Background of Appointments

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Gavai, recommended the elevation of the three judges on May 26.

  • Justice NV Anjaria was serving as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court at the time of his elevation. Originally from the Gujarat High Court, he began his legal career in August 1988 under Senior Advocate SN Shelat. His areas of practice included constitutional, civil, labour, and service law. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and became a permanent judge on September 6, 2013. He took charge as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024.
  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi, whose parent High Court is Rajasthan, was serving as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Enrolled as an advocate on July 8, 1989, he practiced primarily at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal in Jodhpur. His practice spanned civil, criminal, constitutional, service, and election matters. He also served as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel between 2000 and 2004. Justice Bishnoi was appointed an additional judge of the Rajasthan High Court on January 8, 2013, and became a permanent judge on January 7, 2015. He was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on February 5, 2024.
  • Justice Atul S Chandurkar served as a judge of the Bombay High Court prior to his elevation. He enrolled as a lawyer on July 21, 1988, beginning his career in the chambers of Senior Advocate BN Naik in Mumbai. In 1992, he moved his practice to Nagpur, handling a diverse range of legal matters. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.
