Centre Appoints Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar to Supreme Court

New Delhi, May 29, 2025 — The Central Government has cleared the appointment of Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar as judges of the Supreme Court of India, bringing the top court to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the development on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Justices (i) N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, (ii) Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, High Court of Gauhati, and (iii) A.S. Chandurkar, Judge, High Court of Bombay as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.”

The appointments follow recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, on May 26, 2025.

Profiles of the Newly Appointed Judges

Justice N.V. Anjaria

Currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Anjaria hails from the Gujarat High Court. He began his legal practice in 1988 under Senior Advocate SN Shelat and specialized in constitutional, civil, labour, and service matters. He also served as standing counsel for multiple state authorities.

Justice Vijay Bishnoi

Justice Bishnoi is currently the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and originally belongs to the Rajasthan High Court. Enrolled as an advocate in 1989, he handled civil, criminal, constitutional, service, and election matters. He also served as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 2000 to 2004.

Justice A.S. Chandurkar

Justice Chandurkar is a senior judge of the Bombay High Court. He began his legal career in 1988 in Mumbai and shifted his practice to Nagpur in 1992, dealing with a broad spectrum of legal issues across multiple courts.
